Reception Newsletter - 12th May

Date: 12th May 2017 @ 11:02am

Hello everyone,

This week we found some seed packets. We noticed a picture of a dinosaur on the front of the packet. We knew that this could only mean one thing…dinosaur seeds! We read the story How to Grow a Dinosaur by Caryl Hart. In the story, the little boy plants some seeds that grow into a huge dinosaur world with real dinosaurs in his back garden! We were so excited to throw our seeds into our garden and wait for them to grow. All week we have been thinking of the types of dinosaur world the seeds could grow into. In our writing we’ve been describing jungle world, snowy world, desert world and even volcano world.

In maths we have been exploring take away. We now know that subtract and minus mean the same as takeaway and that it looks like this - . We have been reading subtraction number sentences to help us solve the hatching egg problems e.g. Pterodactyl lays 12 eggs and 4 of them hatch. How many are left? 12-4=

In PE we practised our Dinosaur Olympics for Sports Day. We have the Raptor Races, the Pterodactyl Climbing Cliff, the Egg and Nest, Jumping Dinos, Dino Dunking and finally, the Lava Hop. We are so excited for you to join us on Tuesday 16th May!

Show and Tell… Today we listened to some fabulous information from an Encyclopaedia; we celebrated a swimming achievement; we were impressed by a very talented artist; we listened to some lovely news about four beautiful bunnies; and finally we found out that a Granny and Grandpa went on a trip to Spain and brought back some magic wishing stones with them.

Phonics and Reading

We are continuing our reading assessments next week and we will be updating all of the children’s books (depending on the book band they achieve).

Please continue to practise reading and spelling the words sent home before Easter. Thank you!

We have noticed some children are still reversing letters. Please could we have a big push on letter formation; spending a couple of minutes a day focussing on the following culprits…

d, a, c, e, g, b, p, m, n, s, f

(encouraging the children to say the rhyme when they form the letter will help).

Thank you!

Enjoy the weekend!
