Good Morning Year 4!

Did you manage to complete either of the sports challenges yesterday? Who was the best goal scorer in your house? Post a message on the Purple Mash blog and let us all know how many goals you scored.

Today’s challenge is a cricket challenge. Visit Sports 4 Kids YouTube page (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoxPWq-G_ow) to find out exactly what the challenge involves. Good luck!

So far only Bronagh and Deacon have got involved in the boys vs girls competition on Times Tables Rock Stars. Get playing and we’ll see who wins on Friday!

I have had emails from Deacon and Florence telling me what they have been doing this week. Deacon has been enjoying learning about money and keeping busy with the sports challenges. Florence has done lots of research about her local river environments. I have attached a fantastic PowerPoint Florence has created for you all to have a look at.

The BBC Bitesize maths lesson today is about estimating money. This involves rounding money to the nearest pound to help you make quick calculations. Rounding money to the nearest pound follows the same rules as rounding decimals to the nearest whole number.

  • If the number after the decimal is less than 5, it rounds down.
    • £5.25 rounds down to £5
  • If the number after the decimal is more than 5, it rounds up.
    • £5.75 rounds up to £6

Once you have looked at the lesson, have a look at the PowerPoint and try the activity I have attached to this blog for some extra practise.

The English lesson today asks you to take part in the National Writing Day 24/7 challenge. All you will need is a pencil, paper and something to time yourself with. There are just three rules:

1. You are going to write a brilliant 24-word short story.

2. Your story must start with the words ‘One day’.

3. You will write it in just 7 minutes!

If you complete this challenge, post your story on the Purple Mash blog for everyone to read. I can’t wait to see what you can create!

Continuing the comprehension theme for this week I have attached a PowerPoint that focusses on commenting, comparing and contrasting. These are key skills that we use when answering certain comprehension questions. These questions may ask for your opinion about something that has happened in the text – when you answer these questions it is important that you can give a reason for your answer. You could also be asked to compare characters or events within a text, how are they similar or different. Finally, you could be asked to comment on something about the text, for example, how the text is laid out or presented. I have attached a PowerPoint and activity to help you practise this skill.

The final Bitesize lesson today is about how we hear sounds. This is a topic we would have looked at in more detail if we were in school. Sounds are made when objects vibrate. The vibration makes the air around the object vibrate and the air vibrations enter your ear - you hear them as sounds. You cannot always see the vibrations, but if something is making a sound, some part of it is always vibrating. I have attached a PowerPoint that explains how we hear along with an activity sheet. There is also an investigation activity for anyone who would like to try to carry out an experiment at home.

Keep up your times tables practise and keep reading every day. How are you getting on with Roman Rescue?

Enjoy the sports challenge and I will talk to you tomorrow.

Miss Gradwell

P.S. If you keep a record of your scores for each of the sports challenges and send them to me at the end of the week we can find out who the class champion is for each activity!
