Autumn 2- Week 5

Date: 6th Dec 2023 @ 1:08pm

Hi everyone,

We have had a lovely week in Reception getting ready Christmas.

This week’s focus story was the ‘Christmas Jolly Postman’ written by the authors, Janet Ahlberg and Allan Ahlberg. We have loved delving into the story, writing Christmas lists, and preparing to write our own letters to Father Christmas next week.

In phonics, we learned the digraphs, 'ai, ee, igh and oa'. As we practised decoding and blending, we became fabulous phoneme spotters, recognising these digraphs in words! We also practised reading the tricky word 'was'. Keep up the hard work, children. We will start to slow down our phonics programme over the next two weeks, learning two sounds per week. This will help to reinforce everything we have learned so far as we get ready to unwind and recharge for the Christmas break! After the holidays, we will then carry on learning four sounds per week.

In maths, we also looked at 2D shapes, rectangles and squares!  Using language like "corners, sides and legnth",  we were able to recognise shapes and describe their properties. The children also had lots of fun building their own 2D shape snowman.

This week’s Wellie Walk was very Christmassy. We had a lot of fun going on a word hunt. Many Christmas posters were hidden around the outdoor area. We had to find a Christmas poster, read the word on it, and then find the matching Christmas image on a checklist!  We did an excellent job of working together.

We are still working really hard to prepare for our Christmas nativity. Well done, to all those children who have been practising their lines at home. Please keep practising at home 😊.

We wish you a happy weekend,
