End of Autumn 1 in Year 5!

Date: 5th Nov 2023 @ 7:38pm

Hello everyone!

Well, what an interesting first half-term in Year 5 it has been!

We have been up to allsorts, and I am sure you have heard all about it, but here are some highlights from the last 7 weeks:

History Self-led projects

Firstly, I want to thank all of the parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, friends and guardians that have helped the children with their History homework projects over the last 3-4 weeks.

Without exaggeration, they are some of the best we have ever seen in Y5 and it is clear you have all worked so hard on them with the children- it hasn't gone unnoticed!

Some of the children have already had chance to present their work in front of the rest of the class, and we will be continuing this after the half-term holiday. I can't wait!

Thank you again for all of the wonderful work!

History Workshop:

Our 'Traders & Invaders' topic was extremely popular this year, and we finished it off in 'style' with our Anglo-Saxon/ Viking workshop from an external company called 'Marvellous History'.

Again, thank you to everyone who put effort in to helping th children dress up in traditional dress- it made it extra special and immersive!

I have uploaded some images of the day if you head to our 'galleries' page.

Poetry week

Our annual 'Poetry Week' work was also a success this year. Well done to everyone for learning their lines for our poetry assembly.

Pupils wrote their own poems during the week in class, and many of them were inspired enough to enter our 'Poetry Slam' which was another big hit!

Black History Week

As you may know, October is a month dedicated to celebrating the contributions of black people in our society and in the past.

This year, St Mary's focused on the Windrush Generation Anniversary, along with inspirational females from black backgrounds. In Y5, we looked at the story of Windrush and completed a diary entry from the perspective of one of its passengers. Yet another popular subject with Y5!

Equality Workshops

Haven't we had lots of opportunities this half-term already?

Along with the rest of KS2, we had some visitors who came to teach us all about equality as part of our PSHE curriculum/ the Equality Act in school.

Our guests taught us all about stereotypes and people who have sacrificed things/dedicated their lives to helping others in need. The children were extremely engaged and had lots of ideas to share.

Beowulf

Our topic class book this half-term was 'Beowulf' by Michael Morpurgo (based on the original Anglo-Saxon poem). We have loved reading it and writing about the characters together this half-term! Some of the vocabulary was very tricky at times but the children really enjoyed the story!

We have obviously taken part in much, much more than listed above, but I'd be here all day if I went into too much detail.

Stay tuned for our next blog coming soon!
