Once Upon a Time

Date: 22nd Feb 2023 @ 10:35am

Hi everyone,

We have been very busy over the last few weeks enjoying our ‘Once Upon a Time’ topic. Here is a snippet of what we have been up to in our topic lessons this half term…

In Science, we have explored a range of materials and their properties. We visited different parts of school, took pictures of objects made from different materials and discussed the suitability of these materials for their purposes.

In class, we enjoyed exploring a range of objects and investigating whether their shape could be changed by pulling, twisting, bending, and squashing them.

We read the story, ‘The 3 Little Pigs’ and discussed the properties of the materials used to create each house. This led us on to plan an investigation into which material would be the best thermal insulator for the 3 little pig’s houses. We thought carefully about how we could measure the temperature of each house and how to ensure a fair test. Please take a look at the photographs on our class gallery.

We have also been thinking of ways to keep ourselves healthy and strong- like Jack from ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. We have explored the importance of exercise and timed ourselves completing different exercises for one minute then observed how our bodies felt after. Some of the children said they felt, “hot, sweaty, thirsty, tired” and even “energetic” after each exercise.

We have looked at the importance of good hygiene and a healthy diet and have enjoyed sampling a range of vegetable soups and using adjectives to describe their taste, smell, and texture.

In our Food Technology lessons, we have designed a criterion for our own healthy vegetable soup and participated in peeling, cutting, and preparing the vegetables to make this. There are lots of lovely photographs of these activities on our glass gallery, so please do head over an take a look.

To end our ‘Once Upon a Time’ topic, we are planning to hold a ‘Fairy Tale Book Hunt’ next Friday (10th February).  Please see the letter that was sent out for all the details- an electronic copy is available on our class page.

Wishing everyone a lovely weekend. We will see you all next week!
