Spring Term 1 - Week 2

Hi everyone,

What a fantastic week we have had in Reception. The freezing cold weather has not stopped us from having fun!

The Three Little Pigs fairy was this week's focus story. The children had a great time acting out the story using props and creating story maps. We also talked about the different materials the pigs used to build their homes and looked at homes from all over the world.

In phonics, we learned the digraphs 'ur' and 'ow'. As we practised decoding and blending, we became fabulous phoneme spotters, recognising these digraphs in words. We also practised reading the tricky word 'you'. The children have been given a letter formation sheet that reinforces previously taught letter sounds. There is no need to return the sheet to school, so please just do what you can and when you can. Use your imagination to practise letter formation (writing with paint, foam or even a twig in the mud, for example.

In maths, we used part-part whole diagrams to investigate the composition of numbers up to five. We are super mathematicians. We will soon move on to learn about the numbers 6, 7, and 8. The children have been given a fun maths activity, which helps to reinforce the work they have been doing in school.  There is no need to return the sheet to school, so please just do what you can and when you can. It would be lovely if you could upload a photograph of your child's work to Evidence Me so we can celebrate their learning.

As part of this week's Wellie Walk, we spent time in the snow. We practised zipping up our coats, as well as putting on our gloves, scarfs, and hats independently. We were able to recognise a variety of Winter signs because we had previously learned about them. Furthermore, we developed our teamwork skills by building snowmen!

In Come and See, we started our new topic, 'Celebrating'. We discussed what a celebration is and the various types of celebrations around the world.
