Summer Term 1- Week Five

Date: 19th May 2023 @ 7:36am

Hi everyone,

This week, the 'King and the Moon' story has remained our main focus. The children can now confidently retell the story and have enjoyed writing it.

Drawing Club is still a big hit in Reception. Every week, we get a new story, whether it is a cartoon or a traditional tale. We are then introduced to new vocabulary and we are asked to help create actions to help us remember the words. We must then draw a detailed picture to accompany the story! Drawing Club helps to foster a love of reading while also developing fine motor skills, numeracy, and language skills. This week’s story was ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. Check out some of our fabulous creations below!

This week, we worked extremely hard in phonics. We practised reading words with the sounds 'or,' 'ur' and 'er'. We have also begun the Level 4 stage of learning and learned to read the tricky word ‘said’.  We do not learn any new sounds at the Level 4 learning stage. We continue to improve our reading skills by consolidating Level 3 sounds, learning new tricky words, and practising reading difficult words. Please try to continue to review all Level 2 and 3 sounds with your children at home. This revision will boost their confidence while also improving their phonic skills.

In maths, we looked at doubling numbers. We experimented with doubling numbers by placing various objects in front of a mirror and counting them. It was a lot of fun! The children have been given a home learning activity, which helps to reinforce the work they have been doing in school. It would be lovely if you could upload a photograph of your child's work to Evidence Me so we can celebrate their learning.

This week, we had a lot of fun making clay animal sculptures. We started by drawing our own designs and then got right to work. The children enjoyed squeezing, moulding, and pinching the clay, as well as carving details into it with tools. We cannot wait for our models to dry and be painted. Watch this space!

This week's Wellie Walk was a little wet, but we still had a great time.  The children had a great time drawing on tree bark with wet chalk.

We hope that you have a lovely weekend,
