Week Four in Reception!

Date: 4th Oct 2023 @ 8:20am

Hi everyone,

We have had such a lovely week in Reception!

On Monday, we had our school pictures taken  All of us had beautiful smiles! Later that day we were so excited to see a hedgehog on our school playground! The hedgehog was a little scared, so Mrs. Ollerton stepped in to make sure he was safe by putting him in the school grounds' woodland area. Later, he was taken to the vet for a check up!

Our focus story this week was  ‘I Want a Friend’ by Tony Ross. We talked about what makes a good friend, what might break a friendship, and how we can fix our friendships when we fall out.

In phonics, we learnt the sounds 'g,o, c, and k' . We love saying the rhymes as we write the letters!  We have enjoyed doing a lot of phonics-related activities, like squeezing oranges, making playdough cakes, and figuring out which padlocks needed which keys to open!  The children have been given a letter formation sheet, which helps to reinforce the work they have been doing in school. There is no need to return the sheet to school, so please just do what you can and when you can. Use your imagination to practise letter formation (writing with paint, foam or even a twig in the mud, for example.)

This week in maths, exploring measure was a lot of fun. We particularly liked identifying heavy and light objects with balancing scales. The children enjoyed the challenge of locating objects to balance the scales.

We had fun looking for signs of autumn during our Wellie Walk. In addition to finding some berries and wild mushrooms, we also discovered that the leaves are changing colour. In the upcoming weeks, we anticipate finding more signs of autumn. We also enjoyed gathering sticks in preparation for making stick friends. Watch this space!

On Thursday, were so brave to perform our Harvest song, 'Dingle Dangle Scarecrow,' in front of the big boys and girls. The children did an amazing job performing the actions and singing the song. We can't wait to perform in front of our grown ups soon.

We have also enjoyed mixing primary colours.  We each chose two primary colours, and then we watched to see what colour they combined to make.

Next Thursday (12.10.23), in honour of Black History Month, we will be sampling some delicious mango fruit punch and sweet potatoes, as well as creating some beautiful Caribbean artwork.

We hope that you have a lovely weekend,

The Reception Team
